St. Pete's Own Competes at Olympics for the First Time
Olympic local Paige Railey, graduate of USF St. Pete—class of 2010—is a first-time Olympian. She is a member of the U.S. sailing team and gets to compete this year in the London Olympics on the same team as her brother, Zach Railey. A silver medalist in the Finn class, Zach’s first turn at the Olympics was in 2008 in Beijing.
In 2008, Paige was an Olympic hopeful, planning to go to Beijing with her brother. Sadly, her lifejacket got caught in her boom, capsizing her boat in the trials. She lost to Anna Tunnicliffe, who went on to win the gold medal in the Laser Radial class.
Born in St. Petersburg and growing up in Clearwater, Paige certainly is a local star. She began sailing at the age of eight and has been a member of the U.S. Sailing Team since 2005.
Check out Paige as she races in the Laser Radials, with her last race today, Friday. As of Wednesday, Paige had placed seventh overall. With six races behind her already, she has four more races, then a medal race.
In talking about her progress, Paige told USA Sailing, “I’m moving up slowly… If I keep going like that you never know what can happen.”
Missed out on Paige’s success so far, don’t worry! The U.S. Sailing team is all about social—you can follow them on Twitter and Facebook.
